Chapter 19

Three chairs in front of the desk, one behind. In the front chairs sat Reva, Matt, and Myrtle. Across from them, the editor leaned back with a pensive expression across his face, tapping a finger against his temple as the clock in the room ticked off the seconds.

The silence felt particularly excruciating. Each heartbeat sounded too loud, too intrusive.

“Where do I even begin with this…” the editor mumbled. On his desk, a golden name plaque sat prettily underneath the light. Jacob Mason.

Sitting up a little straighter in his seat, Matt struck first. His mind concocted questions while his eyes skimmed the room for any clues. Any indication that could point them in the right direction.

Meanwhile, Reva slouched in the seat and waited for him to take charge. Myrtle, seated in the far left seat, chewed on her fingernails.

“I guess we can start by discussing Shaky’s involvement with the company. Tell me the type of worker he was.” Clicking his pen, Matt held his notepad firmly in his grasp. “As well as the people he often congregated with while working.”

“Shaky was an incredibly diligent and hardworking man,” Jacob began, sifting through his drawers and pulling out a handful of newspapers. Taking the top one, he dropped it in front of Matt. “He loved what he did. Brilliantly gifted and he managed to meet his deadlines every single time. Do you know how rare that is?”

Myrtle fidgeted in her seat.

“None of my other employees can produce in the way he can–” Jacob’s eyes widened suddenly. Then, he cleared his throat, reaching for the nearest handkerchief. “Excuse me. I… I still can’t believe he’s gone.”

“Don’t worry, sir,” Matt replied, scribbling. “I’m assuming Shaky was a well-respected worker, then?”

“Absolutely. Without a doubt. He was a one-of-a-kind talent, you see. People knew that they couldn’t emulate his work, but he was a nice enough guy to not attract much envious competition.”

Matt tapped the pen against his bottom lip. “Do you think Shaky had any enemies in this business? People who wanted to see his downfall?”

“Sure,” Jacob replied, shrugging. “I’m sure many people wanted to see Shaky out of the way, considering his overarching success. I mean, the man was nominated for Journalist of the Year in the New England region, for goodness sake!”

Discreetly, Reva peeked at Myrtle once he said that. The woman wasn’t looking at Jacob. Instead, she stared at her feet and tapped them lightly against the floor.

“Sir… you said Shaky had been missing for a few days, and you didn’t worry about that until now?”

“I did worry,” Jacob replied. “He often brought coffee for me and Dolly, one of the interns, because he liked the same brew as we did. He’d memorized what we liked best. When he stopped coming the last few days, I suspected that he’d packed up and moved elsewhere for a better position.”

“Why would you think that?” Matt pressed. “Surely, you wouldn’t just think an employee that you were somewhat close to would just… leave without a trace.
